Twisters (2024) Movie Review

I finally got to see the new Twisters movie. Oh  no. WHY did this film have to happen? For some reason, Google did not accept my review and I don't care if it was too long or whatever so I decided to put it up here on the Emerald Rangers website instead

WARNING: This review contains some spoilers to the movie.

The original 1996 Twister movie is an absolute masterpiece. Had a great cast, awesome soundtrack (Deep Purple! Van Halen! Heck yeah!) and was really fun and memorable to watch. I used to watch it on VHS as a kid.
It also paved way for further "Disaster Movies" of natural phenomena during the late 90s and early 2000s.

So I came in with high hopes for Twisters, as I liked Anthony Ramos and thought he would have been the saving grace for this movie. Sadly, I was WRONG. The entire cast is TERRIBLE! I disliked their annoying personalities almost instantly. Twisters felt like it took everything away from the original movie and made this new film bland, boring, soulless and just simply frustrating to watch.

Unlike the original 1996 blockbuster, I found the entire cast for 2024's Twisters to be dislikeable and unforgettable. Throughout the whole movie I was hoping that the Tornadoes would destroy all of them.

The movie goes on for a shockingly undeserving 2 hours!!  TWO HOURS! Most of it is drawn out drama played like a soap opera between the teen girl and this guy who you think she has a crush on but turns out he is just a complete idiot big shot Youtuber that not even anyone in the movie seem to care about.

For most of the movie it's just them talking and everybody discussing the weather. Maybe a couple of scenes with Tornadoes. I remember the Tornadoes in the first Twister movie were freakin' terrifying, but these new ones in Twisters felt tame in comparison. Mostly, a generic dark grey cloud. Could they not afford any sinister lighting effects for an EF5?

The lead girl in the movie who is supposed to be a Scientist, has a "Special power" to predict the weather before it happens. Is she supposed to be Superman? That isn't very scientific i'm sorry!
What about the SOUNDTRACK. Do we have Deep Purple? Van Halen? In this movie? NO! To the complete dismay the film is dominated by country music! It's all country music! Not good country music either. It sounds like it's all done by the same "Yee haw! Round em up!" kind of guy. Is it because the Youtuber calls himself a Tornado Wrangler? That was only funny the first time.

The original 1996 Twister movie, which was more fun in comparison to 2024's "Twisters"

The entire movie pretty much feels like a Oklahoma travel vlog, and the Youtuber guys were funny for the first five minutes but they got boring real fast because the writers seemed like they didn't know what to do with them so they made them do the same thing over and over. Drive in the tornado. Shoot fireworks up it. They do this about 6 times. The only thing this script got right was the bighsot Youtubers being hugely annoying.

It felt like the whole movie was written by AI. As if they said "Can we write a new Tornado movie that is different from 1996's Twister" and this was the result.

A huge, soggy mess that when you think the coolest part at the end is about to happen and finally do this movie justice and kill all of the characters the tornado just fades out due to her experiment of "taming a Tornado", for reasons. Good luck trying to do that to every other tornado that happens ever.

How anti climactic.

There is some completely random subplot at the last half where we discover one of the good guys (played by Anthony Ramos, I couldn't care less to remember his character's name unfortunately) turns out to be working for some real estate broker who tries to buy out people's destroyed houses to move them on to Tornado free areas.

I have seen footage of real tornadoes that were more terrifying than the Tornadoes in this movie.

I think the original Twister movie did a much better job of being what it was supposed to be, a fun action-packed disaster movie that didn't seem to slow down or take itself too seriously. But 2024's Twisters, felt to me like it decided to turn itself into a pretty slow teen drama, and throw in a couple of tornadoes for no reason and call it a day, just to call itself "Twisters" and cash in on the original.

Twisters tries too hard to be too realistic - but while there's nothing wrong with that, this is a movie. Not a documentary, it's OK to have a bit of fun with the movie. The first 20 minutes after the movies opening scene is just them talking about the weather. Did this movie really need to be 2 hours?

The boring romance plot never gets resolved either. The movie just ends when they're at the airport.

Do yourself a favor and skip 2024's Twisters completely. Go watch the original 1996 Twister instead for a better time. There are no flying cows in Twisters or anything else memorable.
